Professional Prophylaxis (Teeth Cleaning) in Princeton
How clean is your mouth? Do you brush your teeth regularly? Floss? Even if you have the most rigorous of dental hygiene routines, you still need a periodic professional prophylaxis (teeth cleaning.) The American Dental Association recommends a dental cleaning and exam every six months; and Dr. Bestandji agrees!
What Happens During a Prophylaxis Cleaning at Canal Vista Family Dental?
We strive to give our patients the best care possible. When you come in for your six-month cleaning appointment, you can expect several steps to keep your smile healthy, including:
- X-Rays
- Periodontal Check
- Cleaning
- Dental Exam
- Oral Cancer Screening
Imaging Your Teeth
Getting a few dental x-rays every year is an important step in diagnostic and preventive dentistry. It’s a good way to track the structure of your teeth. Cavities aren’t usually visible with the naked eye. X-rays allow Dr. Bestandji to see decayed areas that are developing between or inside of your teeth.
Intermittent images allow us to carefully detect any changes in your oral health over time.
Gums Are Important Too!
Your periodontal health is as important to your mouth as your teeth. In fact, your gums are important to your overall health! Our dental hygienists will help show you how to take care of your gums and prevent periodontal disease. You may hear them calling out numbers: 1, 3, 2, etc. These indicate the depth of the gum pockets where they hug the teeth. A depth of 4 or greater could indicate gum disease.
A Clean, Polished Smile
The best part of your dental exam and cleaning is the actual cleaning! Using special tools, we gently lift away any plaque or tartar. Then, your hygienist will polish your teeth. Not only will they feel extra clean, but they’ll also be a bit brighter since the superficial stain is buffed away. When you look in the mirror, they’ll shine!
For areas of heavy tartar buildup or hard-to-reach spots, we utilize high-grade ultrasonic scalers for a gentle, thorough clean. Ultrasonic instruments allow us to effectively clean away microscopic biofilm and tartar accumulation, help you reduce your risk of periodontal disease (and consequently, the bad breath that goes along with it!
When You Need More Than Just a Cleaning
If it’s been several years since your last checkup or your periodontal exam is suggesting areas of disease, we may recommend a series of deep cleanings (scaling and root planing) to help you reduce your risk of gum-disease induced tooth loss later on.
Other Preventative Services
Because most common dental problems are preventable, Dr. Bestandji opts to incorporate strategies that help our patients reduce the risk of tooth decay from a very early age. This may be through protective dental sealants, fluoride, or even ClearCorrect orthodontic trays to make it easier for you to keep your smile clean.
