Some of the technology that we’ve invested in include:

Soft Tissue Laser

Soft tissue laser technology allows us to treat lesions and gum problems in a minimally invasive manner for faster results, faster healing, and minimal to no discomfort. Some of the types of laser treatments we’re able to provide range from cold sore treatments and periodontal therapy to cosmetic gum recontouring and crown lengthening (gingivectomies.)

In dentistry, there are a few different types of lasers that are used. The two most common are hard tissue (for enamel and tooth structures) and soft tissue (for gingiva and mucosal tissues.) From there, the lasers vary from the type of light technology that’s being used inside of the laser itself.

Soft tissue dental lasers allow for:

  • Minimally invasive surgical procedures
  • Improved healing
  • Faster recovery from common procedures
  • Treatment on both healthy and diseased tissues (including gum disease and cold sores)

Our soft tissue laser technology uses the SOL® Soft-Tissue Diode laser on all procedures. Its FDA-approved technology is extremely safe for all of our patients.

The SOL® Soft-Tissue Diode is a unique laser that’s the first of its kind to use a blue aiming light, making it easier to differentiate the laser beam from the rest of your oral tissues (most lasers use red.)

Plus, it’s small and portable, so that we can bring it from one room to the next. That way if we need to use it for a particular procedure at the last minute, the patient doesn’t have to be rescheduled!

The laser tip cuts cleaner than a scalpel without charring the tissue, for a less invasive outcome. Additionally, the preset procedures can be customized or an immediate go-to for things like reshaping gums, sterilizing tissues, or periodontal care.

The SOL® Soft-Tissue Diode is safe enough to use on any soft tissues throughout your mouth. From the pockets under your gums where the teeth connect to the rest of your mouth, to the delicate edges of your gums that are visible when you smile, lasers can gently treat them all.

Dental laser treatment for periodontal disease was one of the first reasons why the technology was developed. Diode lasers are able to help destroy infectious bacteria and remove heavy amounts of buildup.

Incorporating a dental laser with your traditional deep cleaning can improve your response to periodontal care. As a result, pocket depths can be restricted and tissues more likely to reattach to the roots of teeth.

The benefits of laser dentistry for gum treatment is that it’s gentle enough to treat the outer layer of tissues, but tough enough to destroy the source of the infection. Compared to deep cleanings performed without a dental laser, you’ll see things like reduced swelling and sensitivity, improved pocket depths, and less bleeding.

If you’ve struggled with gum disease to the point that you’re worried about gum recession, tooth mobility, and tooth loss – getting dental laser therapy in Princeton could help you avoid a referral to a specialist.

Some of the discomfort from tooth extractions is due to swelling at the site of the socket and any incisions. Using a soft tissue laser can immediately cauterize the tissue at your extraction site so that you don’t see as much inflammation during recovery. This is yet another from the list of benefits of laser dentistry.

Do you have “gummy” smile or uneven gumlines? It’s easy to get evenly shaped teeth with laser dentistry technology.

In years past, gum recontouring involved invasive surgical techniques, medicated dressings, and up to two weeks of recovery time. Instead of using a scalpel to reshape your gums, Dr. Bestandji can use the laser to gently shape and recreate a new gumline. You’ll see immediate results and fuller teeth, for better aesthetics the same day!

Another type of gum recontouring isn’t cosmetic, but rather therapeutic. “Crown lengthening” is a similar process where the laser helps reduce the amount of tissue covering the tooth. We use it in instances where a crown is needed but not enough tooth is visible, or if you have deep gum pockets that can’t be cleaned with a typical toothbrush and floss. Lessening the depth of the pocket with a laser can help you prevent additional bone shrinkage or potential tooth loss.

Are you someone who tends to get a cold sore from time to time? Now you can cut the life expectancy of your cold sore in half and no medication is needed! Simply call our Princeton laser dentistry office the second you feel the tingling sensation of a cold sore popping up. We’ll get you in right away for a short visit to treat the location with the SOL® Soft-Tissue Diode laser. It only takes a few minutes!

As long as you catch your cold sore quickly, you can expect it to be smaller and less painful, running its entire course within a matter of a few days. If you have a big event planned, same-day cold sore treatment can be a lifesaver!

A frenum is the tight strips of skin in the middle of your mouth, just behind the upper lip. There’s also a frenum / frenulum under your tongue.

When these strips of tissue are quite tight, they can restrict the movement of your lips and tongue. More often than not, they’re first noticeable in babies. It may be that infants can’t latch correctly to nurse or feed, or that as they become toddlers, they might have a noticeable speech impediment.

Fortunately, lip tie and tongue tie treatments are easier and gentler for your baby or infant when it’s performed with a laser. But the procedure can also be completed on older kids, teens, and adults! With a bit of special exercises, your muscles will get used to having a wider range of motion for improved function.

Compared to conventional “clipping” or “cutting” methods used for treating tongue ties, a dental laser is significantly easier for our patients.

Dental Lasers & Gum Disease

Thanks to advancements in soft tissue laser therapy, Canal Vista Family Dental is able to provide laser decontamination and gum treatments to help our Princeton, NJ, patients battle periodontal (gum) infections more effectively.

Our patients who choose laser gum disease treatments can drastically lower their risk of having to see a periodontal specialist, due to the statistically proven faster healing times.

With laser periodontal therapy, lasers actually trigger the gums to re-attach to the tooth surfaces, physically shortening the depth of the pockets around infected teeth. Deep cleanings without lasers do not. Even with good home care, most soft tissues do not reattach as much as they do when treated with a soft tissue dental laser.

The best part is that laser periodontal therapy is extremely comfortable. While traditional gum surgeries require extensive numbing and possibly even sedation dentistry, laser treatments do not (but you can request them at any time!)

Dental lasers are also useful for:

  • Tongue ties and lip ties (frenectomies) in children
  • Cosmetic gum recontouring
  • Cold sores and ulcer treatment
  • Tooth desensitization
  • Removal of excess gum tissue
  • Adjusting soft tissues around wisdom teeth
